Vermeer in the MMA
Walter Liedtke, Curator of European Paintings and the author of a monograph on Vermeer
The curator will discuss the style and meanings of the Museum’s five paintings by the famous Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer (1632–1675), comparing them with works in the same galleries by painters that Vermeer admired, such as Gerard ter Borch, Nicolaes Maes, and Emanuel de Witte. Since the 1880s the taste for Vermeer’s poetic imagery has been pronounced in the United States, with the result that fourteen of his thirty- six known pictures are now in American collections.
Thursday, March 26, at 1:30: $300
Luncheon will be served at 12:15, prior to the tour.
