VENEZUELA: Democracy Beyond Elections, film & discussion December 16, 2008

THE FILM AND SPEAKERS

Following a preview of portions of the film Beyond Elections:Redefining Democracy in the Americas, Venezuelanalysis reporter JAMES SUGGETT will provide an update on the status of implementation of social programs based on his personal interviews with grassroots organizations in the barriosof Venezuela.

Suggett has lived and worked in Venezuela since August 2005, when he was a delegate at the
World Festival of Youth and Students in Caracas. Prior to his work in Venezuela, James was a
researcher at the Institute for Policy Studies and a national youth organizer in Washington, D.C.

CARLOS MARTINEZ, Operations Director for the Global Exchange Venezuela Program,
will also be present to facilitate the discussion. Carlos has been coordinating political
and educational delegations to Venezuela over the last year and is co-editor of the
forthcoming book, “Voces Adentro: Emerging Voices from Venezuela’s Grassroots”.
