The play is the story of Rafael’s journey told by Magdalena, who is on her death bed reminiscing of how she got to this point. Rafael is the oldest of three brothers who all witness their parents murdered on their property by the Black Hand of Sicily, Don Carmine. Rafael’s father, Alphonse, was a noble farmer who looked after the citizens of Sicily and was known for treating those with respect and consideration. After convincing his brothers to remain in Sicily, and continue his father’s tradition, despite pressure from the Black Hand to leave, Rafael was convinced to rely on the Vatican to bring peace.
Rafael’s close friend is Angelo, the younger brother of Don Carmine, who despises his older brother. Angelo has been given specific instructions from Carmine to get rid of Rafael, his two brothers (Charlie and Nunzio), and their family so that the Mafia can control the property inherited by the sons following Alphonse’s death. Angelo, knowing Rafael’s temperament, has Nunzio murdered and frames it as if the Black Hand did it to send a message.
At the funeral, Angelo helps convince Rafael to take matters into his own hands, and Rafael sends his remaining family, Brother Charlie and his wife to look after Rafael’s pregnant wife Magdalena and son Domenico. Angelo agrees to have his body guard, Butchko, personally train Rafael in mortal combat. While Rafael is in training for a year, Angelo strategizes on how to use Rafael to take out Carmine so that he can take over and become the new Black Hand.
Angelo succeeds, as Rafael succeeds in single-handedly wiping out Don Carmine’s entire army and finally murdering Carmine, while the whole time, wearing a Roman Kalkriese mask to hide his misery and creating a character, THE VENDICATORE. Angelo then secures his own safety and stature by murdering Rafael on the spot. The play finishes with Magdalena’s overview of her own emotions just before she passes and begins to touch on the life of her and Rafael’s two sons.
