The transformation of the urban infrastructure from analog to digital is well underway. Cities around the globe are embracing ubiquitous public-access wireless networks, intelligent transportation systems, location-based services such as mapping and search, and investing broadly in digital communications along with security and monitoring systems. Like the corporate campus in the 1990's, the city is about to become the next great platform for smart applications and services. Some believe the city itself will become as programmable as any other digital system. In doing so, it will create a better living environment for residents, along with a broad range of new services for government. Those entrepreneurs and investors plugged into this transformation will see numerous opportunities to create new services around new business models.
The Emerging Technology Forum of the VC Task Force will host an expert panel that explores the drivers and trends underlying this new digital urban landscape, especially focusing on next generation applications. Our panel will also probe the technological innovations, market opportunities in the context of social and economic risks. Thus providing intelligence for investors and entrepreneurs involved in tomorrow's smarter city.
