This is a story of Vanya and his good friend Dr. Astrov. The trees, the soil, and the simple work of the farm are poetic inspiration for Astrov and a crucial livelihood for Vanya. Then the professor arrives, with his liberal intellectual pretensions and a dangerously beautiful young wife, and threatens to tear apart the physical and emotional terrain they have so carefully cultivated.
