Description:
We open our event in May with a presentation by Maik Hassel on programming mobile devices using Java. He will demonstrate how J2ME enables us to write feature rich and interactive software like 3D games and business solutions that run on your cell phone or PDA. Following the presentation we'll have round-the-room introductions, open networking, and then close with a door prize draw. Be sure to bring your business cards and a story or two to share.
About the presentation:
Small consumer electronics have a way of changing our lives. Mobile phones let us communicate when away from our home or office. Personal digital assistants (PDAs) enable us to access email, browse the internet and run applications of all shapes and forms. J2ME, the most recent addition to Sun's Java family, is aimed squarely at these consumer devices with limited horsepower. Many such devices (e.g., a mobile phone or pager) have no option to download and install software beyond what was configured during the manufacturing process. With the introduction of J2ME, "micro" devices no longer need to be "static" in nature. Not unlike a web browser downloading Java applets, an implementation of J2ME on a device affords the option to browse, download and install Java applications and content. However the capabilities of devices within the "Micro Edition" may vary greatly and part of the challenge is to develop applications that can adapt to these differences.
RSVP limit:
Only 50 members (including guests) can RSVP 'Yes' or 'Maybe' for this event. There's still room for 10 more.

Notes:
After covering the key concepts behind J2ME we will develop and deploy our first interactive game, hopefully sending you home with the urge to go and write the next "killer application" for mobile devices.
