COORDINATOR/S: Prof. Benjamin Premkumar , School of Computer Engineering,

Nanyang Tech. University, Singapore.

Prof. K R Ramakrishnan , Dept. of Electrical Engineering .

OUT LINE AND OBJECTIVES:

Ultra Wide Band has attracted considerable attention for short range communications recently. Features such as flexibility, robustness and high precision ranging capability have made UWB an excellent candidate for many applications. As the spectrum of UWB occupies several GHz tight regulations have been imposed on the transmission power of the UWB signal. UWB communications is especially attractive in applications that involve high data rates over short distances. Such applications include WPAN, wireless USB, digital video and wearable devices.

This tutorial covers theoretical aspects of UWB radio communications and gives some practical applications. This course is by no means rigorous, but a cursory look at different aspects of UWB signals and systems. We wish to briefly cover the following topics.

COURSE CONTENTS :

The course will be in six parts.

1. Introduction to UWB

2. UWB definition, emission mask and pulse modulation techniques

The range of frequencies that are covered by UWB is discussed. The different types of pulse modulation techniques such as TH-UWB, DS-UWB and MB-UWB are discussed.

3. TH-UWB signal power spectral density

In this section the PSD of the TH-UWB is derived. The approach follows that adopted in analog PPM.

4. Link Budget analysis of UWB systems

Since UWB signals must coexist with other radio signals, it is expected that there will be interference from and to UWB signals. In this section, how to read and apply emission masks will be discussed. The maximum distance of propagation at a given data rate under a given error probability will be determined.

5. The UWB pulse generation and the UWB channel

The emphasis in this section would be to focus on the details of UWB pulse generation. Further, the channel will be discussed (isolated pulse receiver for binary orthogonal PPM, Propagation over multipath affected radio channel and impulse response)

6. UWB AWGN channel and applications

The effect of propagation of UWB signals over an AWGN channels is discussed. One application on UWB namely localization is discusses.

COURSE ORGANISATION:

The tutorial consists of 6 hrs of lectures at Golden Jubilee Hall of ECE Department, IISc.
