University of St. Thomas Hosts Forum for Pope’s Encyclical Caritas in Veritate

Pope Benedict XVI’s 150-page encyclical might be hard to read for some because of the length or the language. To help better understand the Pope’s encyclical, the University of St. Thomas will host a First Friday Forum panel discussion, “Caritas in Veritate,” at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6 at Ahern Room, Crooker Center, 3909 Graustark, Houston, TX 77006.

Pope Benedict’s Caritas in Veritate, “Charity in Truth,” revisits and reevaluates Pope Paul VI’s 1967 encyclical on promoting integral human development, Populorum Progressio, “The Progress of Peoples,” especially in terms of the challenges facing the 21st century.

The panel of distinguished scholars consists of Louise Zwick, Casa Juan Diego; Rev. Jack Gallagher, CSB, UST School of Theology; and Dr. John Hittinger, philosophy, UST. Deacon Sam Dunning, director, Office of Justice and Peace, Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston and Catholic Campaign for Human Development, will serve as the moderator. The panelists will discuss the key issues and pivotal facets of Pope Benedict’s intricate and timely presentation.

The University of St. Thomas Rev. William J. Young Social Justice Institute, Maryknoll First Friday Forum and the Pope John Paul II for the Church in the Modern World sponsor the panel discussion.

The event is free and open to the public. Parking is available for $2 in the Moran Center, 3807 Graustark at W. Alabama. For more information, call Young Social Justice Institute at 713-525-3812 or younginstitute@stthom.edu
