D. Kern Holoman conducts this performance of Mendelssohn's 'Elijah,' the composer's last major work. The story of the Hebrew prophet Elijah, significant to Christians and Jews alike, served as an ideal subject for a composer of Mendelssohn's cultural persuasions. The genre allowed him to revel in his affinities for both Bach and his predecessor in English affection, Handel.
