MEDIA ADVISORY:

COASTAL COMMUNITIES TO HOST SERIES OF MEETINGS CONCERNING ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE;
LOCAL MEETING TO BE HELD IN SOPCHOPPY ON WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29 AT 7:00 PM

On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon Oil Rig exploded and consequently sank, killing 11 workers and releasing at least five million barrels of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico, making it the largest environmental disaster in U.S. history.

Since that time, many citizens along the coast have been working to raise awareness about the continuing affects of this disaster, including illnesses among “first responders” (clean-up workers) and residents, devastation to coastal habitats and industries, and ecosystem restoration.

This, within the context of historical pollution and environmental depletion of coastal communities, will be the subject of a series of meetings scheduled to be held along the coast.

What: Meeting held to discuss the environmental justice movement as it relates to this area

Who: Cherri Foytlin with Gulf Change, Drew Landry with the Solution to Pollution Project, and Melissa Starbuck, Wakulla County Oil Disaster volunteer.

Where: The Frog and Hummingbird Company, 118 Municipal Way, Sopchoppy, Florida.

Why: To raise awareness of the continuing affects of the 2010 oil catastrophe, environmental justice issues in the area, and to unite coastal communities to the larger movement of clean air and water as a God-given human right, and that “anything less is a human rights violation".

PRESS RELEASE:

COASTAL COMMUNITIES TO HOST SERIES OF MEETINGS CONCERNING ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE;
LOCAL MEETING IN SOPCHOPPY ON WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29 AT 7:00 PM

On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon Oil Rig exploded and consequently sank, killing 11 workers and releasing at least five million barrels of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico, making it the largest environmental disaster in U.S. history.

Since that time, many citizens along the coast have been working to raise awareness about the continuing affects of this disaster, including illnesses among residents and “first responders” (clean-up workers, Vessel of Opportunity crews, etc.), devastation to coastal habitats and industries, and ecosystem restoration.

This, within the context of historical pollution and environmental depletion of coastal communities, will be the subject of a series of meetings scheduled to be held along the coast.

Cherri Foytlin, a Louisiana resident who recently walked from New Orleans to Washington D.C. to raise awareness of these issues, has spoken with top public officials as well as in media and public forums across the nation.

The journalist and mother of six will be available for a community roundtable type discussion titled “Unite the Gulf for Environmental Justice” to be held at The Frog & Hummingbird Company in Sopchoppy on Wednesday, June 29th at 7:00 PM.

Foytlin's book “Spill It! The Truth About the Gulf Oil Catastrophe” was recently accepted by the Louisiana Library Association as a member of the prestigious Author's Row.

In addition, Foytlin will speak about her role in the non-profit group “Gulf Change”, a nationwide collaborative effort for environmental justice based in the Gulf Coast, which states that “Clean air and water are a God-given human right; anything less is a human rights violation”.

The event will be hosted by The Frog & Hummingbird Company, 118 Municipal Way, in Sopchoppy. The evening will also include the music of Drew Landry.

Landry, a talented singer/songwriter who spoke and sang during last year's president appointed Oil Spill Commission's hearings, has been an outspoken voice in protection of coastal areas and culture, and has recorded a series of songs for the “Solution to Pollution Project” with Dr. John.

Landry will be available to discuss the project, created by singer songwriter Bobby Charles, and the vision for helping people learn to provide for a sustainable future for coastal communities.

According to Foytlin, “There are four different goals for the roundtable discussions:

1) To unite the environmental justice struggles in areas affected by toxic chemicals as it relates to health and ecosystem damage, including oil refineries, oil spills, chemical plants, toxic waste dumps and more, for the larger movement of clean air, water and soil as a human rights issue.

2) To unite, educate and encourage the people now ill from toxic chemicals - in particular those related to the 2010 Gulf Oil Catastrophe.

3) To raise awareness of all of the above issues, as well as identify specific needs of individual coastal communities.

4) To ask the question, ‘How can those in the environmental justice community help each other to reach their unified goal of justice and a sustainable future, here on the Gulf Coast and across the nation?'”

The series of meetings will be held over six days, in all five coastal states.

The event is free and open to the public. Interested parties are encouraged to attend and those wishing to participate in the discussion will be invited to do so.

There are numerous articles available about Cherri Foytlin on the internet, as well as many YouTube videos of her speeches and Drew's music. Additionally, you may view the Facebook page for “Gulf Change” at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Gulf-Change/229360920411954.
