Undoing Public Law 280 One Tribe at a Time is a lecture by Carole Goldberg, Jonathan D. Varat Professor of Law, UCLA.
UCLA professors, Carole Goldberg and Duane Champagne, have recently completed a nationwide study of state law enforcement and criminal justice in indian country under Public Law 280. Their 550-page report includes the first in-depth examination of retrocession - the process for removing state criminal jurisdiction and restoring the system of shared tribal and federal authority for criminal matters on reservations.
Professor Goldberg will address the rationales for retrocession, the obstacles to achieving retrocession, and the experiences of tribes that have sought to attain it.
