Uncovering, Discovering and Recovering: What Happened to the History of Slavery in New York? January 26, 2006

As the exhibit, Slavery in New York, at the N-YHS demonstrates, African and African American slavery had a long if disreputable history in New York, directly shaping the lives of both black and white New Yorkers for more than two centuries. But at the beginning of the twenty-first century, most New Yorkers-black and white-seem to have no memory of the institution and no knowledge of its history. A group of distinguished scholars will discuss what happened to slavery's history.
