As the exhibit, Slavery in New York, at the N-YHS demonstrates, African and African American slavery had a long if disreputable history in New York, directly shaping the lives of both black and white New Yorkers for more than two centuries. But at the beginning of the twenty-first century, most New Yorkers-black and white-seem to have no memory of the institution and no knowledge of its history. A group of distinguished scholars will discuss what happened to slavery's history.
Panel discussion with Ira Berlin, University Professor, Department of History, University of Maryland; Cynthia Copeland, Director, The American Revolution New Media Project, New-York Historical Society; Leslie Harris, Associate Professor of History, Emory University; Christopher Moore, Curator and Research Coordinator, Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture
