The Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at UBC Farm and the 100-Mile Diet Society are celebrating the Farm’s first market of the year and the official launch of the Vancouver 100-Mile Diet Foodshed Map.
Mark Bomford, UBC Farm Program Coordinator and Kelly Kuryk, Foodshed Project Coordinator will be speaking about the unique collaboration between the 100-Mile Diet Society and the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at UBC Farm, synthesizing action, research and education.
As the only working farmland within the city of Vancouver, the UBC Farm is an urban agrarian gem, featuring a landscape of unique beauty and productivity. Currently, it is highlighting how sustainable agricultural techniques can reduce the negative impact of the food system on climate change and the environment.
The Vancouver Foodshed Map takes the tradition of bioregional mapping to a new edge. It is a unique, hand-built looking poster crowded with painted images and narrative blurbs that evoke the area’s food culture. Folks will be able to view this magnificent piece, purchase the poster and tickets for the pancake breakfast at the 100-Mile Diet booth at the UBC Farm Market.
Collaboration of on-farm research, education and outreach are impacting the food system by creating a critical mass of “empowered eaters” with the knowledge and desire to make changes to their food consumption habits. Please join us in our efforts to celebrate these endeavours and to make a toast to our farmers and this region’s bountiful supply of delicious foods. Bring your own cup.
This project between the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at the UBC Farm and the 100-Mile Diet Society has been generously supported by Environment Canada through the EcoAction Community Funding Program, VanCity and Metro Vancouver.

“Eating with the fullest pleasure – pleasure, that is, that does not depend on ignorance – is perhaps the profoundest enactment of our connection with the world. In this pleasure we experience and celebrate our dependence and our gratitude, for we are living from mystery, from creatures we did not make and powers we cannot comprehend.”
