UBC Creative Writing Presents
An MFA Cabaret
A Showcase of Readings By Graduating MFA Students
Join us for a celebratory cabaret-style evening of readings by UBC’s 2008 Creative Writing MFA graduates. Get a sneak peek at the newest crop of up-and-coming literary stars and enjoy food, music, dancing, and, of course, great literature. You’ll hear about everything from growing up with goats in your house to blowing up ghost ships on the high seas, from readers representing the many genres of UBC Creative Writing’s program. Extra goodies on the menu include an appetizer and dessert potluck, a live banjo cameo by our own fiction professor and novelist extraordinaire, Keith Maillard, and co-operative DJing by some of our most musically-inclined MFAs.
Readers will include Claire Tacon, Emilie Allen, Mike Christie, Sheryda Warrener, Laura Fee, Michael John Wheeler, Kathy Para, Ria Voros, Kellee Ngan, Brianna Brash-Nyberg, and more. UBC’s Creative Writing program is renowned for producing graduates who go on to illustrious literary careers—alumni include Madeleine Thien, Nancy Lee, Fred Wah, C. E. Gatchalian, Daphne Marlatt, Bill Gaston, George Bowering, Robert Bringhurst, and Stephanie Bolster. Come to the cabaret in your favorite semi-formal attire; this is your chance to break out the bow ties, bustiers, and platform heels. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to hear over a dozen emerging writers read from their best new work.
