War and conflict have tested the mettle of some of our greatest presidents with threats and concerns of the most serious nature – even survival itself. How did these presidents decide to go to war? How did they conduct their relationship with the country’s military leaders? How did they deal with issues concerning citizenry on the “home front?” Did they respond to the challenges of war by temporarily or permanently expanding the powers of the presidency?
