Georges Bizet's 'Carmen' is the most performed opera of all time, and certainly the most popular. But, what truly makes 'Carmen' a classic is how it lends itself so gracefully to reinterpretation. Once again, this point is proven in 'U-Carmen.' 'U-Carmen' is a modern-day rendition of 'Carmen' that is set in a South African township and spoken in the native language, Xhosa. 'U-Carmen' is loyal to operatic tradition, but it also possesses cinematic merits.
