Austin-based improvising percussionist Chris Cogburn is an active composer, performer, educator and organizer. Approaching the physical nature of his chosen instrument with an interest and attention to the drum's subtle and overlooked timbres and textures, Cogburn's music gives rise to unexpected sound worlds suffused with meanings and forms, acute yet infinite. Moving across, atop, below and around a single drum with a variety of percussive objects and implements, Cogburn's fluid physicality provides a rich dynamic to an expanding complexity of sound.
Primarily working in the field of Creative Improvised Music, Cogburn has collaborated with many of the premiere international artists in contemporary music, including: John Butcher, Pauline Oliveros, Tetuzi Akiyama, Dave Dove, Joelle Leandre, Jaap Blonk, Sean Meehan, Joe McPhee and avant-rock outsider Jandek.
Since 1998, Cogburn has led workshops on creative music making around the US, Canada and Mexico, working in contexts as diverse as inner city community centers, homeless shelters, battered women's shelters, art spaces, dance studios, public and private high schools and elementary schools, Pauline Oliveros' Deep Listening Space and the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, Mexico.
As an organizer, Cogburn has previously hosted performances by international improvisors, always in direct collaboration with local artists. Beginning in the summer of 2003, Cogburn's Ten Pounds To The Sound has hosted an annual festival of improvised music - the No Idea Festival - showcasing a handful of Texas' premiere creative musicians in collaboration with improvisors from around the U.S., Europe, Japan, Mexico and Canada. Mike Vernusky is an Austin-based composer, performer, and sonic artist. He explores sound through the mediums of concertized, theatrical, and filmic environments, primarily through the use of electronic media and live performance. His music encompasses a wide textural palate that incorporates motion, stasis, color, veil, and spectral space.
For his sound materials, he draws upon any available sonic impulse, spanning manipulated voice or instruments to digital artifacts, silence, and pure noise. As a guitarist, he has performed with a variety of instrumental ensembles from around the world in both scored and improvisational settings.
In 2004 he won the Grand Prize in Music for the Digital Arts Awards in Tokyo, and has since been awarded two residencies at the Atlantic Center for the Arts. As a film composer, his works have screened at over 30 film festivals around the globe including Tribeca in NY, the LA Int'l Film Fest, and Rotterdam IFF.
This fall, he is an invited artist for Visiones Sonoras in Mexico City, where he will premiere 'thou,' an autobiographical work based on the ideas of mythologist Joseph Campbell.
Cory Allen is an electroacoustic composer from Austin who applies his study of cognitive science to compositional methods in order to 'tune in' the music to a listener's nervous system. Allen has worked with such aesthetics as human biorhythms, Moroccan trance rituals, and vibrational tones which resonate at the speed of the human body Chakras. Cory has releases on con-v, bremsstrahlung recordings and quiet design, with his latest album 'satori in atlantis' on the test tube label this December. In addition, he has scored film, constructed sound installations, and performed at last year's Audio Inversions electronic concert at the Austin Museum of Art.
