Turning Point Opens March 12, 2010
On Friday, March 12, 2010, 2nd April Galerie will host the grand opening of Turning Point … the very first ever private gallery woodturning exhibit in Stark County, Ohio!
Turning Point features the woodturnings of Minerva turner Marty Chapman, an exhibitor at 2nd April since 2004.
“Chapman’s wood pieces showcase the inherent beauty of indigenous northeast Ohio hardwoods and provide a unique expression of form, function and fluidity” says Brennis Booth, co-owner of 2nd April.
Chapman has created over thirty completely new works for Turning Point including vases, bowls, platters, and free form sculpture from such local woods as black walnut, wild cherry, silver maple, ambrosia maple, American beech, black locust, sassafras, and box elder.
Chapman recently commented, “What I love about turning is that I can throw a piece of green wood on the lathe and make shavings fly and almost immediately see the color and grain emerge and at the same time hear the sound of wood and tool colliding and smell the odor of fresh cut wood. Then when the surface is right, it just feels good to touch the wood! What a sensuous experience!”
According to Todd Walburn, 2nd co-owner, Chapman has taken the craft of turning and morphed it into a fine art form. “Marty’s (wine bottle) stoppers are amazing. You can look at each of them is a work of art in itself. Each one is unique and unusual. Then you see the sculptural pieces or a vase and you ask, ‘how the heck did he do that?’”
Chapman, a retired local attorney and former educator teaches woodturning at the John C. Campbell Fold School in Brasstown, NC. And lives with his wife carol and dog Paris on a 57-acre farm in Paris Township.
Turning Point will run from March 12 through April 2, 2010. Included at Second April Galerie during the run of Turning Point are the works of over thirty artists as well as the availability of 15 studios with artists showing their work. A number of them have created new works for Turning Point.
