The Tufts New Music Ensemble presents a performance by student musicians directed by John McDonald and Donald Berman. NME features students from across the music spectrum at Tufts, from classically trained pianist to jazz guitarists to garage band experts. They all join forces to compose original works, play graphic scores, make arrangements of contemporary works for chamber ensemble, and improvise. The concert will take place on Friday, April 29, 2011 at 8 p.m. in the Distler Performance Hall at the Perry and Marty Granoff Music Center on the Tufts Medford/Somerville campus.
Tufts New Music Ensemble will be performing a premiere of a work for IPod applications called “apt.” This will be a digital media composition that explores highly sophisticated portable software with low definition portable handheld devices. The spirit of digital improv will be one of the important themes of their Annual “Physical” concert in memory of NME alumnus Jonathan Neumann who passed away in 2001 after a battle with Leukemia. The concert will also feature performances of graphic scores by the composer Meyer Kupferman (1926-2003) from the 1960s, works by Frederic Mompou, John McDonald and Peter Lieberson for piano and a work for cello and piano by Su Lian Tan.
