The VanHoutan family founded Noah’s Hope for their son Noah (7) and their daughter Laine (5), both of whom have been diagnosed with Batten disease. Batten disease is a cruel and rare childhood disorder for which there is currently no cure. Over time, children affected by Batten disease/LINCL suffer from epilepsy, become unable to communicate, become mentally impaired, and lose their sight and motor skills.

Eventually they become bedridden, tube fed, and suffer from dementia. Currently Batten disease/LINCL is always fatal and ends in death, usually between the ages of 8 and 12. Noah has lost most of his speech, the ability to feed himself, and the ability to walk, however his will and determination have not wavered. Laine’s story is just beginning to unfold.

Noah’s Hope was created before they knew that Laine would also fight this terrible disease. They are continuing to research, raise funds, and inform the community through Noah’s Hope.

However, they now pour themselves into Noah’s Hope for the benefit of both Noah and Laine, and for Emily who will watch as her siblings travel on this difficult journey.

Noah’s Hope, and ours, is that researchers will soon discover a cure for this devastating disease.
