A seemingly classic redemption story, Jan Thomas (Pal Sverre Hagen) has served his eight-year term for the murder of a young boy, and is released back into society a rehabilitated man. Thomas, a talented organist, secures a job at an Oslo church where he can indulge in his musical forte anonymously without the burden of community judgment for his conviction. Settling into his new life, he begins to forge a friendship with the pastor, Anna (Ellen Dorrit Petersen), and her young son. Despite a reticence to embrace intimacy, and a looming fear that his secret will be discovered, Thomas begins to believe that he has truly left his past behind him, and that his relationship with Anna will lead to a chance at love, happiness, and forgiveness. But true closure still lies beyond one fateful final encounter, because now Anna’s son is missing, and someone from Thomas’ past has been watching him. A sensitive, slow-build script, original directorial vision from Erik Poppe, and bravura performances turn Troubled Water into a highly-charged ride that is both gritty and poetic.
