Z-U is one of the bands to watch on the London jazz scene this year playing dates at the Vortex Jazz Club, supporting Seb Rochford’s Polar Bear at Ronnie Scott’s, and having secured a forthcoming slot at the London Jazz Festival. The group is the latest offering from Dune Record’s Tomorrows Warriors - a prestigious set up of semi-professional musicians selected for their talent and potential in jazz. The Tomorrow's Warriors project has been a major force in the careers of Soweto Kinch, Tony Kofi and Jason Yarde.
Z-U is led by bass-player Neil Charles - long-term bassist in Soweto Kinch’s band. Shabaka Hutchings - currently on sax and clarinet for Courtney Pine’s Jazz Warriors project which also features with the band’s drummer, Tom Skinner - a member of London’s F-IRE collective. Z-U’s sound is cultivated using interesting loops and effects and the band have honed an entirely unique sound in jazz from their drive to push the boundaries of improvised music. They represent the current generation of jazz players and have worked with some of it’s most exciting exponents.
