Triburgo’s newest body of work, Transportraits 2008-2010 is a series of 15 20x24 formal studio portraits of transgendered men, each one set against a hand painted landscape background.
Lori “Lorenzo” Triburgo is a transgendered artist who works in digital photography and mixed media and his photography exhibits, including a series that documents a transgendered man’s breast removal surgery, have shown widely in Portland, New York and Los Angeles.
An opening reception will be held at the PCC Rock Creek Campus, Helzer Gallery, Building 3, on Friday, Feb. 12 6-8pm and is open to the public.
In his artist’s statement, Triburgo says that “photography is a subjective medium often mistaken for objective,” and he draws a comparison between photography “and the perception of gender as an unchanging truth.”
Says PCC art instructor and former Portland Art Museum curator Prudence Roberts, “I think it’s important to note that Triburgo’s images have nothing to do with sexuality… but are rather concerned with identity and how that gets tied up, rightly or wrongly, with gender.”
Additionally, Triburgo says in his statement, “The “T” in LGBT community is chiseling its way into American consciousness through a sporadic but increasing presence in news and social media,” and this, he says, includes photography as a vehicle to examine identity.
The exhibition and receptions are sponsored by the Associated Students of PCC (student government), the Rock Creek Multicultural Center, and the campus' Gay Straight Alliance (GSA).
