"Tribal Time, Ceremony, and Public Art": A talk with Hachivi Edgar Heap of Birds September 13, 2007

Solstice,equinox and tribal honoring of time globally has had a solid link with many indigenous societies. Their significant scientific awareness of the passage of star bodies above us all was and is a prime focus of life. Many tribal groups created art in public forums which reflected these observations. Today public art,such as "Wheel" in Denver,Colorado, carry these same desires to renew this earth. Mr. Heap of Birds is an internationally known Cheyenne artist. He received his M.F.A. degree from Temple University in Philadelphia and has also studied in London. His paintings and public installation art works have been exhibited throughout the United States, as well as in Canada, China, Australia, and Ireland. His research interest is in documenting the works of contemporary Native American artists. He is currently part of the faculty of Native American Studies at the University of Oklahoma, Norman. Free and open to the public.
