Lively, traditional Irish music and songs featuring fiddle, mandolin, whistles, guitar, drum, and voice.
Kinvara is the name of a small town in County Galloway on the west coast of Ireland. It is also the name taken by a local traditional Irish music band. Grant Crowley, Sue Davis, Mark Masterson and Dennis O’Malley all live in northeast Portland. They are all American made with Irish parts. Traditional bands such as Planxty, The Bothy Band, Dervish and Solas have been their inspiration. They have been pouring out the sounds of strings, whistle, drum and voice in playing traditional Irish music and song together for over seven years. There is no doubt that the group has come a long way over the years. After over 70 performances and producing their own CD, creatively entitled “Kinvara”, they now respond with a steady confidence to the request to “play something you know.” In listening to Kinvara, one indeed finds that “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” Despite their individual and collective achievements, they have remained humble, each one a human bundle of walking, talking contradictions partly truth, partly fiction. So why should you come out to hear these folks? Because as they sing in one of their trademark songs “for good times and good friends we’ll ne’er steer you wrong.” And in these difficult times, it’s good to remember that it was traditional Irish music that was sustaining all those passengers on the lower decks of the Titanic on their final journey.
