UNM Continuing Education invites you to tour on the Royal Gorge Train. In the late 1870s miners traveled to the Upper Arkansas River Valley of Colorado in search of rich lead and silver ores. So valuable were the mining riches to the west in Leadville, that it attracted the attention of two competing railroads. While both Denver and Rio Grande and the Santa Fe had tracks in the valley, there was room for only one set of tracks through the spectacular gorge cut by raging waters of the Arkansas river. The steep-walled, narrow gorge is over 1,000 feet deep and cut through a high plateau of igneous rock. The tour leaves Friday, March 19, 2010 at 8am from the UNM Continuing Education parking lot and will return on Saturday, March 20 at 8:00pm. The fee of $260 includes travel, a boxed lunch the first day, train ride, and lodging. For more information visit dce.unm.edu/story-of-new-mexico.htm or call Joan Cok at 277-0563.
