The Tivoli Theatre in Downers Grove is a French Renaissance-style hub for contemporary releases, foreign films, and several performing arts groups each year. As part of the Downers Grove July Historic Photo Tour, Classic Cinemas will present a tour of the Tivoli Theatre, the first theatre acquired more than 30 years ago by the Classic Cinemas chain of independent movie theatres. Free one-hour tours will be offered every 15 minutes on Saturday, July 10, 2010, from 10 AM to noon.
The Tivoli Theatre’s rich history dates back to the 1920s. Visitors will learn about its original owners and architectural style while traveling behind the scenes on the stage and the downstairs dressing rooms. Also on display is the dazzling three manual 10 rank Wurlitzer theatre organ used by the Chicago Area Theatre Organ Enthusiasts (CATOE) to conduct programs. Besides live music by CATOE, other arts groups such as Midwest Ballet Theater and West Towns Chorus perform at the Tivoli Theatre.
The event will include an excursion to the projection booth and a “secret passage” that leads to Tivoli Bowling Lanes. Once the tour is concluded, visitors are invited to enjoy one-dollar bowling games beginning at 1:00 PM or use the game room for a round of pool or car racing.
