On August 1, 2008, at 11:09 UT (4:09am PDT), a total solar eclipse will occur as the moon moves directly between the sun and the earth. Since the eclipse is not visible at all in the United States, San Francisco's Exploratorium brings its fifth eclipse expedition team to remote Xinjiang Province in Northwestern China, close to the Mongolian border, where the Exploratorium will webcast the eclipse live to the world.
See it in person live at the Exploratorium, or on the Internet. This event is both a celebration and party, a look at Chinese culture, and pure Sun-Earth Connection science. There will be rest areas for those who want to catch some shuteye. (Bring sleeping bags/picnics.) Webcast begins at 3:30am PDT (10:30am UT), August 1. The event will be hosted by the Exploratorium's Dr. Robert Semper with Exploratorium planetary physicist Dr. Paul Doherty; Dr. Eric Christian, heliospheric scientist, NASA; and Dr. Na Wang, Director, Urumqi Observatory. This webcast event is made possible with support from NASA's Sun-Earth Connection Education Forum, a collaboration between UC Berkeley Space Sciences Laboratory and NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center, funded by NASA Office of Space Science.
