Tory Wright
Crimson and Clover
Good Citizen
July 22 – August 20
Opening Reception Friday, July 22, 6-10 PM
Good Citizen will feature the work of Tory Wright in an exhibition titled “Crimson and Clover”. Exploring the intersection of commerce and fashion and using collage as a a drawing tool, Wright transforms familiar faces from high fashion magazines and department store advertising using a photocopier and exacto blades. Beauty and alienation exist within her new constructs, resulting in a more complex seduction than that of the original imagery. Good Citizen will also be featuring Wright’s work for the billboard project from July – August.

Tory Wright draws upon her experience working as a visual merchandiser for a large department store. This position has allowed her to observe directly how the methods of the advertising industry are intended to seduce the American consumer. Promising the power of transformation through transaction, the suggestion of luxury is embedded in the formal qualities of store displays and commercial imagery. Wrights use of the photocopier negates the pristine production value prevalent in fashion photography, revealing the underlying deception. Wright’s collages explore the idealism of fashion design and how that design acts as a vehicle for capitalism.

Currently residing in Charlattesville, VA, Tory Wright earned her MFA from Maryland Institute College of Art. She has exhibited her work in solo and group shows at Space 1026 in Philadelphia, PA, Civilian Arts Projects in Washington DC, Lump Gallery in Raleigh, NC, Cinders Gallery in Brooklyn, NY, and Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts in Omaha, NE. This will be her first solo exhibition in St. Louis.
