On Saturday, August 21 at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre the Toronto premiere will take place for one of the most acclaimed and controversial Japanese films of the last decade; Sion Sono’s four hour magnum opus, LOVE EXPOSURE.
Love Exposure tells the story of Yu, a young man striving to please his father while finding the true love of his life…….other than that, the film defies description. It is an often violent action-comedy-drama-satire that touches on religion, family, sex, love, lust, guilt and more. It shocks, surprises, delights and disgusts, all the while cleverly dabbling in the unique otaku (a Japanese term used to refer to people with obsessive interests, particularly anime, manga, or video games) culture that is so seductive to some and repulsive to others. Love it or hate it, it leaves a lasting impression and is a must see for film lovers.
“Almost impossible to imagine a four-hour long film featuring castration, transvestism, religious cults and Catholic guilt complexes could be so darn passionate, so uplifting, so edge-of-the-seat entertaining. A one-off, indescribable experience” – Jasper Sharp, Sight and Sound Magazine.
Director Sion Sono is a controversial filmmaker and poet. He gained international notoriety for such films as Suicide Circle, Noriko’s Dinner Table and Strange Circus. Love Exposure has won awards around the world, including the Caligari Film Award and FIPRESCI Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival.
