Richly-shaded noir of an edgy returning vet seeking revenge for his father's mistreatment at the hands of merciless produce wholesalers. Riveted together by the skilled direction of soon-to-be-blacklisted Dassin, and standout performances of the stars. This is a must see masterpiece.
EDGE OF THE CITY 1957 dir. Martin Ritt with John Cassavettes, Sidney Poitier, Jack Warden
The code of silence surrounding the murky, corrupt world of the docks is set up by the blacklisted Ritt (in his directorial debut) to explore the complexities of racial brotherhood and tension. Simultaneously subtle and sharp, this film leaves an impact long after the closing credits.
