TOOTHLESS CHANDELIER: A Mighty Gallery presents
INTERNATIONAL CHIPTUNE RESISTANCE
THURSDAY JUNE 1, 2006

Gallery entrance at
550 15th st, SF, CA
6PM - 9PM

Low-bit tactical specialists equipped solely with Nintendo Game Boys and NES consoles operate as a highly dangerous mobile chiptune assault unit. Enter a romscape, of familiar beeps, clicks, and bits of obsolete game hardware, repurposed into arresting laser-guided installations and low-res, hard-hitting precision rhythms -- all delivered at high volume from standard issue handhelds and home gaming consoles. The machines are small, the sound is gigantic, the scope is worldwide, the advance is unstoppable. Prepare your defenses.

BIT SHIFTER (NYC, 555 recordings) explores high-energy low-bit music composed and performed on the Nintendo Game Boy, in service of a sound both beat-heavy and melodic. Tagged by Rolling Stone as a "Game Boy hero," Bit Shifter's music adopts an innocently familiar soundset, redirecting it into the service of novel and visceral new idioms, all on a pocket-sized console. The result: giant sounds from small machines. http://www.bitshifter.cc/

NULLSLEEP (NYC) uses Game Boys and NES consoles to create conceptually unique music that blends subversive hardware hacking with powerful melodic pop. In 1999, together with friend Mike Hanlon from Detroit, he cofounded the 8bitpeoples: a collective of artists interested in the audio/video aesthetics of early computers and videogames. His visual art approaches similar territory, capturing those fleeting moments where New York meets Nintendo. Have you seen the flying goombas hanging out with the pigeons lately? Oh, and watch out for those giant flesh eating plants that pop out of the green sewer pipes. Nullsleep consistently demonstrates his passion for pushing the limits of both the hardware and the heart. http://www.nullsleep.com

xk, as well, will be providing visuals and audio for the night's performance. Presumably, he'll be using his MIDINES creation also used by such (glitch/hard) core heroes as Bogdan Raczynski and Venetian Snares. MIDINES is a hardware / cartridge interface (game) that enables MIDI control of the 8bit NES sound chip. Midines allows the 8bit NES to join the ranks along side other retro gear in the professional MIDI recording studio. NesFX is a retro graphic visualization that is seeded by the incoming MIDI sound data, and is included with Midines. Version 1.1.0 features 256 samples (accessible in two keyboard banks) featuring TR707,TR808,TR909,LINN,Amen+other breaks, stabs, and essential chip battlz. http://www.wayfar.net/0xf00000_overview.php

FLIGHT404 is the title under which the co-founder and Creative Director at the Barbarian Group, Robert Hodgin, houses his narrative and visual experiments. He will be providing visuals for BitShifter's set. Using the freeware java compiler, Processing, (http://www.processing.org), all of the presented visuals will be rendered live (no prerecorded film loops or pre-processed effects). Live audio analysis from BitShifter's performance combined with a live webcam input augments the effects. Most of the work will be done through a MIDI drumpad which has been programmed to allow the control of camera angles, colors, effects and transitions. Prepare to be amazed by awesome beauty. http://www.flight404.com

CAMERON SOREN is a video/installation artist and student at the San Francisco Art Institute. In essentially his own words, he will be presenting big sceneries on the computer made out of cut outs and pieces of old Nintendo games. He takes villages from Zelda style games and adds graffiti, changes the words around when the characters are having a conversation so they change their dialogues, and cutup clipart wall installation fuckwithery. It's pretty big. His cellphone blog is at http://www.flickr.com/photos/forcequit

MIGHTY pushes aside the party and aims to promote the access to and appreciation of San Francisco's art, culture, and art culture via its new mighty gallery, TOOTHLESS CHANDELIER. The nature of a music venue in concert with a gallery gives artists, both visual and audible, a chance to intersect for a most visceral nightlife experience. toothless chandelier encourages artists to feel limitless and express their perception of the indomitable, the omnipotent, or the courageous through murals, installations, couture, and video. While remaining an indefatigable location for dancing and drinking, Mighty wants to create a vibrant space for exhibitions, installations, digital works, murals, photography, sculpture, lectures, and colossal collaborative happenings on behalf of San Francisco's tenacious and talented artists. The gallery will have daytime hours for the public, to engage the community and see whom Mighty champions and which creative champions champion Mighty.
