Throughout the world, Grammy-nominated guitar virtuoso Tommy Emmanuel has redefined the art of playing what he modestly calls “finger style guitar”. Early in his playing career, Tommy was inspired by the music of legendary American guitarist, Chet Atkins. Years later, Atkins became one of Emmanuel’s biggest fans, eventually granting him the status of “Certified Guitar Player” in 1999. Tommy Emmanuel is one of four individuals ever to be awarded this designation (along with John Knowles, Jerry Reed and Steve Warner). In addition to Chet Atkins, Tommy Emmanuel has performed with an impressive list of stars including Les Paul, Eric Clapton, Keith Urban, Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner, Joe Walsh and many others. Tommy and his brother, Phil also turned in an amazing performance during the closing ceremonies of 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. Tommy Emmanuel has recorded a total of seventeen albums, his most recent being The Mystery, in 2006.
Emmanuel’s recordings and his concert appearances continue to expand his legions of fans and win him critical acclaim. While his recordings continue to be impressive, those who have attended his prior concerts here in central New York can attest that Tommy Emmanuel’s mastery of the guitar and impressive showmanship are best appreciated at live concert performance.
Tommy Emmanuel will be joined at both the Syracuse and Rochester concerts by Loren Barrigar, the premiere finger-style guitarist in central New York and one of the founders of the Guitar League. Loren’s music has been influenced by Chet Atkins, Merle Travis and Tommy Emmanuel, himself. Loren holds the record of being the youngest performer to appear on the stage of the Grand Old Opry, playing Atkins’ “Yakety Ax” at the ripe old age of six.
