Tokyo, today, is a flashy hyper-modern city, while simultaneously boasting a castle with a complexly layered fabric of intimate old neighborhoods. BJordan Sand, associate professor in the Department of East Asian languages and cultures at Georgetown University, probes the strata of present-day Tokyo to reveal the transformations that have taken place in the city’s 400-year history.
