July 7-30, Tues.-Fri. 10:30-5:30, Sat. 11-5
Sandra Lee Gallery is honored to welcome Toi Hoang back to the Bay Area after a seventeen year hiatus in Brooklyn, NY. The migrated recipient of the Society for the Encouragement of Contemporary Art (SECA) award, in 1994, brings a solo exhibition of recent works to San Francisco. The show will be on view at the gallery July 7-30th, with an opening reception on Thursday July 14th from 5-7:30pm where the artist will be in attendance.
Shortly after his solo SECA exhibition at SFMOMA, Toi Hoang escaped the radar of San Francisco and almost two decades later, we welcome him home to showcase a portfolio of entirely new works. Hoang has left behind his dark, aggressive combine paintings, reminiscent of violence and tragedy. Although this new painting process is similar to that of his early work, these canvases take form with minimal color, white upon white.
Influenced by many artists who also seek light and embrace void with their work, this body of work is very active in process. Hoang rips canvas strips, creating long lines and layers, followed by meditated drips and strokes to emphasizing the serenity of these pieces. Having spent the last seventeen years in fast-paced New York, Hoang eschews the chaos and uses his art as an expression of his mindful lifestyle.
Sandra Lee Gallery will host this recent work alongside a small selection of pieces from Hoang's 1994 SECA exhibition to exemplify the division of the artist's style, like night and day. We welcome the public to visit and see the reemergence of this artist, dignified and tranquil.
