To Germany and Back March 3, 2011

Join us for a lively conversation with artists Rashawn Griffin, Wayne Hodge and Nadine Robinson as they discuss their time in Germany and its influence on their interests and approaches.
Rashawn Griffin received a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore and an MFA from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. He has been in exhibitions including R.S.V.P. and 30 Seconds off an Inch at The Studio Museum in Harlem, the 2008 Whitney Biennial and Freeway Balconies at the Deutsche Guggenheim in Berlin, Germany, among others. He was a 2005-06 artist-in-residence at The Studio Museum in Harlem. Griffin lives and works in New York.

Wayne Hodge received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ. He has been in exhibitions including Frequency and 30 Seconds off an Inch at The Studio Museum in Harlem, as well as exhibitions at The Drawing Center and Kunstraum BLAST, Cologne, among others. He has been a resident at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, the AIM program at the Bronx Museum and the Whitney Independent Study Program. Hodge lives and works in New York.

Nadine Robinson received a BFA from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and an MFA from New York University. She has been in exhibitions including Freestyle and alles grau at The Studio Museum in Harlem, as well as SITE Santa Fe 2008 and the ICA Philadelphia, among others. She was a 2000-01 artist-in-residence at The Studio Museum in Harlem. Robinson lives and works in New York.

Up/Down, North/South is a series of three public dialogues between multidisciplinary artists and scholars. Organized as part OFF/SITE, a collaboration between The Studio Museum in Harlem and the Goethe-Institut New York, these programs draw on the notion of geography to focus conversations on the role of place in artistic production. The discussions will address both local concerns about the relationship between the urban environment and aesthetics; as well as art-making practices in black European society. Questioning art historical discourses that have emerged in the wake of Communism between “East” and “West,” Up/Down, North/South emphasizes ideas of cultural syncretism and antagonism across European and US contexts.

OFF/SITE is a collaboration between The Studio Museum in Harlem and the Goethe-Institut New York.
