What if you were suddenly considered “fat” without ever taking a single bite of food? This happened to 29 million Americans when U.S. “fat” guidelines were changed – including LeBron James, Tom Cruise, Will Smith and Christian Bale, who are all now considered “obese.” The controversy is chronicled by award-winning documentary director Darryl Roberts in “America The Beautiful 2: The Thin Commandments,” which is showing on Thursday, March 1, 2012 at 7 PM, located at the Tivoli Theatre, 5021 Highland Ave. in Downers Grove.
Sponsored by Rogers Memorial Hospital and Linden Oaks at Edward Hospital, the screening is a benefit for the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders. Following the film is an audience Q and A with the director. Tickets are $20.
“America The Beautiful 2: The Thin Commandments” endeavors to answer the question, “What was behind a ruling to declare so many people to be fat? Was it political, financial or for the good of humankind?”
Roberts explores how diet companies have raked in millions in profits because of the new standards – guidelines the weight loss industry helped structure. The director interviews spiritual guru Deepak Chopra, Secretary of Health Kathleen Sebelius, the Arch Bishop of New York, Timothy Dolan and former Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher, among others, about the promotion of weight loss surgeries, fad diets, disorderly eating and whether it’s possible to be healthy at a variety of sizes and weights.
