A full orchestra and a cast of over 40 actors bring to life the passengers and crew of the “unsinkable” Titanic, as they move from elation to disbelief and from despair to hope during that night of the quintessential marine disaster of the century.
The discovery of the wreckage of the RMS Titanic in 1985 attracted Yeston's interest in writing a musical about the famous disaster. Titanic is based on the true story of the great ship's maiden voyage from departure in Southampton, England to the sinking in the Atlantic by an iceberg. The show touches on issues such as class, immigration and mankind's vulnerability in the face of nature. The story follows passengers and crew members who actually existed and were aboard the Titanic back in 1912.
Stone and Yeston knew that the idea was an unusual subject for a musical. Nevertheless, the show became a surprise hit and won the 1997 Tony Award for Best Musical among other awards. The release of James Cameron's film Titanic in December 1997 helped fuel worldwide interest in the disaster.

Some Augustana Arts Titanic Production factoids:
Scale of the performance:
This production is the largest ever offered at Lakewood Cultural Center.
To accommodate the cast of 46 and a full orchestra, dressing rooms had to be set up in the basement.
Nearly all actors play multiple roles in different classes (1st, 2nd, 3rd and crew), creating the challenge of costuming, makeup and hair.
People in the performance – all home grown talent.
Authenticity of the performance – research required to be true to the topic: including replica chandeliers, chairs, blankets, life jackets as well as costumes and wigs.
