The joy of finding love is equaled in intensity only by the despair of fearing that it is not meant to last.
Time and fate can be treacherous allies in love.
Little wonder, then, that some of the finest literature and greatest movies are about love transcending time. This month, the Landmark Loew's Jersey presents three of the most legendary such films.
Wuthering Heights – Friday, April 27 at 8PM
Starring Laurence Olivier & Merle Oberon. Directed by William Wyler. Produced by Samuel Goldwyn. (1939, 110mins., B&W, United Artists) Though repeatedly re-made, this is considered the definitive version of Emily Bronte's classic novel. Olivier and Oberon give outstanding performances in this story of love, loss and time.
The legendary screen-writing team of Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur wrote the script, with uncredited input from John Huston. A timeless classic not to be missed by lovers of film.
Portrait of Jennie – Saturday, April 28 Matinee at 2:30PM
-- -- -- -- Encore Screening at 6:30PM
Starring Jennifer Jones, Joseph Cotton, Ethel Barrymore. Directed by William Dieterle. Produced by David O. Selznick. (1949, 86mins., B&W and Color, Selznick International) A story of love and a rift in time, Portrait of Jennie is both touching and haunting, and the kind of film that stays with you for ever. Mostly overlooked when released, it is now considered a great romantic fantasy and one of Selznick's best films. It boasts wonderful performances by Jennifer Jones (arguably her finest work), Joseph Cotton, Ethel Barrymore and others, beautiful cinematography that includes outstanding, on location views of wintry New York, and a haunting score. Don't miss this rear chance to see this classic on the big screen.
Somewhere In Time – Saturday, April 28 at 8:40PM
Starring Christopher Reeve, Jane Seymour and Christopher Plummer. (1980, 103mins. Color, Universal/Rastar) Anyone who has ever fallen in love against long odds will embrace this story of love in defiance of time itself. Made in 1980, the film was a throw-back to the kind of romantic fantasies made decades earlier (such as Portrait of Jennie), having few special effects and relying instead on the chemistry of its cast. Seymore and Reeve make one of the screen's most memorable couples. Reeve's performance is all the more memorable and touching given his tragically shortened career. Like Portrait of Jennie thirty years before, this movie was paned and ignored when released. But in the years since, it has built a near-cult following, and is considered a modern romantic classic.
Each screening is $6 for adults, $4 for seniors & children 12 years old and younger. Combo discounts for two or more
screenings are available.
The Landmark Loew's Jersey Theatre is one of America's grandest surviving Movie Palaces, and now operates as a non-profit arts center. The Loew's screens movies on our 50 ft wide x 25 ft high screen, using carbon arc illumination for the brightest, whitest light. We run reel-to-reel, not platter, which often allows us to screen an archival or studio vault print that is the best available copy of a movie title.
The Loew's Jersey, located at 54 Journal Square, Jersey City, is directly across JFK Boulevard from the JSQ PATH Center, is minutes from the N.J. Turnpike and is easily reached by car or mass transit from throughout the Metro Area.
