Tigran Hamasyan Wins First Place at the 2006 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition.
Tigran was born July 17, 1987 in Gyumri (Armenia). From the age of 2 he showed an extraordinary interest in music. By the age of 3 he was singing Zeppelin, Deep Purple, The Beatles, Louis Armstrong, and Queen songs while accompanying himself on the piano. Beginning at 7, Hamasyan began writing his own compositions, while developing his knowledge of the music of Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Art Tatum, Miles Davis and Bud Powell. Coupled with his love for Armenian folk, his music has developed into a unique synthesis. He has won prizes at numerous competitions in Europe and the US and has performed at concerts and festivals throughout Europe since 2001. He has already released several albums; and this August a new album will be recorded featuring Nate Wood, Ben Wendal, Sam Minaie, and Areni. The band will be giving a concert scheduled on August 25, 2008 at The Roxy Theater in West Hollywood, to perform most of the new material. In addition, there will be special guest appearances by Arto Tuncboyaciyan and Djivan Gasparyan Jr.
