In November the Thursday Afternoon Film Series pays tribute to the late Paul Newman with four of his better known films. The movies will be shown in the Williamsburg Library Theatre, 515 Scotland Street. They are free of charge and tickets or reservations are not required. November 6 The Long, Hot Summer (1958)
A drifter with a bad reputation (Paul Newman) stirs up trouble in a small southern town by romancing the lonely daughter (Joanne Woodward) of a powerful local fat cat (Orson Welles). This steamy potboiler is based on short stories by William Faulkner and directed by Martin Ritt.
November 13 The Hustler (1961)
Paul Newman plays cocky pool hustler Fast Eddie Felson in this dark drama that was nominated for nine Academy Awards. Determined to beat the poolrooms ace player Minnesota Fats, Felson disregards the warnings of his girlfriend and aligns himself with a ruthless gambler. Jackie Gleason, Piper Laurie and George C. Scott costar under the direction of Robert Rossen.
November 20 Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969, Rated PG)
Paul Newman and Robert Redford play real-life outlaws Butch Cassidy and Harry Longabaugh, aka The Sundance Kid in this lighthearted western. Butch and Sundance are successful train robbers but the old west is fading into history and there is a pesky posse on their tail that just wont give up. George Roy Hill directed, Katharine Ross costars and Burt Bacharach provided the musical score.
November 25 The Verdict (1982, Rated R) - Special Tuesday Screening
Paul Newman received his seventh Oscar nomination for his performance as a disreputable, alcoholic attorney seeking redemption by defiantly prosecuting a shady medical malpractice lawsuit in this fine courtroom drama. Sidney Lumet directed from a script written by David Mamet with Charlotte Rampling, Jack Warden and James Mason costarring.
