Fine historical drama about the May/December love affair between Elizabeth I of England and Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex. The affair was doomed by his blatant ambition and her unwillingness to share the throne. Bette Davis is typically great as the aging queen and Errol Flynn is quite appealing as Devereux. The film is directed by Michael Curtiz and is based on a stage play written by Maxwell Anderson.
