ALASH, the popular quartet of Tuvan throat singers, returns to New England Conservatory for a concert of music from the Central Asian Republic of Tuva. These remarkable singers are masters of an ancient technique which allows one set of vocal chords to produce two or more distinct pitches at the same time. Hearing this music live is a thrill not to be forgotten.
This concert is presented in conjunction with an intensive three-day workshop in the music of Tuva, presented by the Summer Intercultural Institutes at the New England Conservatory on July 19-20-21. The musicians of Alash and their American interpreter Sean Quirk will give instruction on the techniques of throat-singing and introduce students to Tuvan repertoire which they will rehearse and coach. Instruction in Tuvan instruments will be provided as well.
More information about the Tuvan music workshop and other excellent workshops in this summer program can be found here. Each of the workshops is demanding, but no previous experience with any of the featured repertoires is expected or required. Summer Intercultural Institute workshops conclude with an informal performance by students and faculty. Participants must register in the NEC Summer School program. Tuition is reduced for those who register and pay one month before their workshop begins.
More information about Alash and Tuvan throat singing can be found on the Alash website.
