Three Stooges Short! "You Nazty Spy!" 1940, Sony Repertory, 18 min. Dir. Jules White. Anticipating Chaplin’s THE GREAT DICTATOR, The Stooges introduce us to Moe Hailstone, supreme dictator of Moronica. Perhaps their most critically acclaimed short, this has a slightly surrealist feel that’s rare for the boys; it was the personal favorite of both Moe and producer-director White. With Lorna Gray, Richard Fiske and Don Beddoe. [35mm]
Double Feature: DUCK SOUP, 1933, Universal, 68 min. Dir. Leo McCarey. Margaret Dumont appoints Groucho (Rufus T. Firefly) as prime minister of Freedonia, and he promptly declares war on a neighboring country for no particular reason. With the legendary mirror sequence and Harpo’s and Chico’s mercurial harassing of the lemonade vendor. [35mm]
BANANAS, 1971, MGM Repertory, 82 min. Dir. Woody Allen. In hopes of impressing a girl (Louise Lasser) passionate for political activism, heartbroken Fielding Mellish (Woody Allen) travels to the minuscule Latin American nation of San Marcos, where he gets involved with the rebel movement and ultimately becomes the country's president. [35mm]
