The World of Art Beads: An New Form of Bead Weaving September 10, 2008

From September 10 to November 20, 2008, the Japan Information and Culture Center (JICC), Embassy of Japan will host an exhibition of intricate bead weaving created by Miho Kanaya of Kamakura, Japan.

Ms. Kanaya was raised in Kamakura, the ancient capital of Japan. Her weaving expresses the deep roots she has in this historic and spiritual city. The centerpiece of the World of Art Beads exhibition is a six-fold Japanese Byobu screen depicting the many landmarks of Kamakura, including its famous giant outdoor Buddha statue.

In addition to the Kamakura screen, the exhibition will feature a number of other bead weaving masterpieces including a selection of all bead kimono. Ms. Kanaya has created a special “Four Seasons” collection that captures each individual season’s feeling through vibrant imagery. The Fall kimono was actually used on stage during a Noh theater production of Macbeth. Also featured will be colorful bead woven images and fashion accessories.

The exhibition is open Monday through Friday 9am to 5pm. It will be closed September 15, October 13, and November 11.
