The World Above Us
January 31, February 1 and 2 at 7:00 in Cleveland Public Theater's James Levine Theater, 6415 Detroit Avenue, as part of Cleveland Public Theater's Bigbox series:
The World Above Us is an innovative mixed-media opera that combines actors, live music, recorded music, dance, film, photography, painting and text into a dramatic whole. The music for The World above us ranges from Appalachian folk ballads, to rock and blues, to electronic sound-scapes.
Set in Cleveland, The World Above Us follows three generations of women from the same family who share strange, otherworldly visions: Sara, who emigrated here from Appalachia during the depression, Kate, her granddaughter, who grew up in the 1980’s, and Georgia, Kate’s abandoned daughter, who is just now coming of age. Weaving together the past and the present, the seen and unseen world, the story explores themes of family, madness, love and desire.
The World Above was created by Greg D’Alessio, an award-winning Cleveland composer, singer-songwriters Charlie Cheney and Quinn Sands, and features Amy Compton, and Stuart Hoffman in the lead roles, the dance of Antaeus Dance, the photography of Mark Slankard, and the paintings of John A. Sargent III.
