The Well Connected City: How innovation in services and mobility contributes to sustainability. March 9, 2010

Design London in partnership with Living Labs Global invite you to a one day symposium on how innovation in services and mobility contribute to creating sustainable cities. The event coincides with the launch of a new publication “Connected Cities: Your 256 Billion Euro Dividend”. This is the first practical guide to the market for innovation in services and mobility in cities, showcasing how cities are exploiting digital technologies to enhance their sustainability and to transform the nature, value and effectiveness of public services.

Join us for this day of knowledge sharing and discussion plus meet the leading practitioners, service providers and academics who are shaping the future of this domain.

Our keynote speaker is London's Westminster City Council, a leader in the exploitation of digital technologies, wireless broadband networks, and mobile solutions who will share its vision of the Well Connected City and its experience to date, as well as the challenges still to be overcome. You will hear contributions from International organisations such as Arup, Ferrovial, IBM and RATP- Paris transport company, plus specialist application providers , who will showcase their capabilities and emerging services. This not to missed event will demonstrate new ways for you to connect communities, business and public services to build not only a sustainable city, but one that thrives.

Afternoon Breakout Sessions on Design for Sustainability and Innovation in Mobility Services:

The afternoon session will feature two breakout sessions. Session A will focus on Design for Sustainability with contributions by leading researchers. This session is aimed at the academic and research community, but open to all to attend. Session B will focus on Innovation in Mobility Solutions with contributions from service providers and practitioners. Both Sessions begin at 2.00 pm.

Session A will explore the challenge facing policy makers, architects, engineers, managers and other stakeholders as they design, renew and sustain the physical infrastructure of cities, balancing economic and environmental objectives while creating appealing and authentic urban spaces. Throughout the world, existing urban areas must be retrofitted to achieve lower carbon emissions. New purpose-built ecocities – such as Masdar and Dongtan – are being created to be economically and ecologically sustainable. With so many future choices still to be made, cities have a unique opportunity to realise far-reaching innovation, environmental and efficiency gains by systemic thinking about how to design, build and operate sustainable urban infrastructure. This academic breakout session will discuss the key challenges involved in designing and delivering sustainable urban environments. The session will include contributions on smart transportation, infrastructure design and operations of sustainable cities, entrepreneurship and the eco-city, and integration of social, economic and urban design strategies. For researchers wishing to join this afternoon session only, rather than the entire day, please indicate this on the registration page.

Session B will explore the very latest solutions for increased mobility that enable cities to transform the quality and efficiency of urban services, with a special focus on health, transportation, energy and the environment. The sessions will address the experience of cities and practitioners who are leading the way in exploiting such solutions to deliver innovative new services for their citizens, enterprises and public sector resources.

Presentations will be delivered by project leaders working on new urban logistics schemes with DHL, on solutions to bring independence and work to the 80 million visually impaired people in the world's cities, and how to turn Park&Ride into an exciting and meaningful service experience.

Simon Blake - Hasso Plattner Institute for Design Thinking

Simon Blake is a senior staff member responsible for project development and executive education at the HPI School of Design Thinking. Besides being a teamcoach during the semester, he was involved in setting up the D-School's Executive Education program in 2008. He has a background in applied media sciences and holds a degree in social and economic communications. Before joining the D-School, Simon co-invented several patent pending crossmedia innovations for customers like Daimler or Foresee. In his sparetime, he develops games for his little nephew and likes cycling at Berlin's lakesides. Being an avid drummer for about twenty years, Simon claims having been a local rockstar in his youth.

Volker Buscher - Director Arup

Volker Buscher is leading Arup’s work in the use of Information Technologies in resource efficiency and the development of its sustainable design approach for cities and utilities called Urban Information Architecture (UIA) and for enterprise and government organisations called Sustainable IT. This focus places Arup at the leading edge in the emerging chapter in the modernisation of our society - The strategic use of information management to deliver resource efficiency and great places to live and work.

Volker is experienced in how technology creates value, the design of solutions and their implementation. He has been responsible for business change, procurement advice and the integration of systems in major capital projects. He is responsible for Arup’s Information Technology and Communication systems advice in property and cities working on major projects in Europe, Middle East, USA and SE Asia, including strategic reviews of business and technology requirements for public and private sector organizations.

He is a director of Arup’s IT and Communications Consulting, Management Consulting and the Property market. For many years has spoken on global conference platforms translating the current thinking on connected urban development’s and the evolution of green IT strategies.

Prior to Arup he worked for Electronics firm Siemens AG and the US Norden Corporation in software development and marketing.



Elisabeth Dawidson, Project Manager, Astando

Ms. Dawidson has a M.Sc. in Physical Geography with focus upon GIS and remote sensing. She is project manager for a navigation system for visually impaired that is being developed on behalf of the City of Stockholm and is coordinating the activities within the bigger e-Adept project. Before coming to Astando she was responsible for the GIS activities at a non-profit company. Dawidson has also been working at Mitsubishi Electric Automotive B.V. as a map coordinator on the team that is developing the navigation systems for Volvo cars.



Stephen Dodson Director - Director, DC10plus

The DC10plus network aims to promote social inclusion through the use of technology. It is a collaborative network of over 2000 local authorities and their partners from industry, government, academe and third sectors. It is dedicated to creating partnerships, sharing best practice and developing new initiatives and influencing policy. The DC10plus network helps local authorities and their service delivery partners to empower people and connect communities through technology and innovation.

Stephen is currently the National Director for the DC10plus Network and an independent adviser to other Government departments on inclusion and innovation. He has previously worked within local and central Government in a variety of capacities working across all sectors focusing on social, economic and digital inclusion issues and innovation. Stephen programme managed two of the former ODPM’s National Projects before moving to Communities and Local Government as the National e-Innovations & Digital Challenge Programme Director in September 2004. More recently Stephen has been an advisor to the Cabinet Office on Channel Shift and is working on the Cross-Government Innovation Forum.

Moritz Gekeler - University of Arts and Design, Karlsruhe

Moritz Gekeler works as a futurist for a big german car maker in Berlin. He is a certified design thinker and holds a degree in comparative literature, italian and theatre studies. At the moment Moritz Gekeler is writing his PhD-thesis at the University of Arts and Design in Karlsruhe. During his studies he has been working as a radio editor and gathered experiences as assistant director in different opera productions.

Pascal Gemmer - Technical University of Berlin

Pascal Gemmer is studying mechanical engineering at the Technical University Berlin, with an emphasis on design methodology and open innovation. He is also co-founder of the upcoming Berlin based agency Dark Horse Innovation GmbH. In 2009 he graduated from the School of Design Thinking at the Hasso-Plattner-Institute Potsdam. Meanwhile Pascal Gemmer conducted a research project to synthesize design thinking with design methodology according to Pahl-Beitz at the KTEM - Institute Berlin.

Sascha Haselmayer, General Director, Living Labs Global

Mr. Haselmayer is an expert in the field of knowledge and innovation intensive urbanism in international environments. Trained as an Architect at the Architectural Association in London, Haselmayer has worked on a wide range of design & strategy intensive urban and socio-economic development projects across Europe, Asia, Latin America and Africa for non-governmental, public and private organisations.

Dominique Laousse - Director Prospective and Innovative Design RATP - Paris

Dominique Laousse, MSc Economics, MBA joined RATP Prospective and Innovative Design team as project director of various projects on mobility 2.0, smart mobility particularly with MIT Media Lab, virtual mobility (serious games). Other topics of interest are applied cognitive sciences to urban navigation in complex spaces, mobility learning and coaching, mobility management and new economy of urban mobility. He is a former project manager for French Ministry of the town on transport and social exclusion and times in the city. He is currently member of different scientific committees of international networks dedicated to sustainable mobility like MoVe, International permanent observatory for sustainable mobility (www.move-forum.net) and Fundacion Movilidad (http://www.fundacionmovilidad.es:8080/). He is also expert for ICTs Paris cluster Cap Digital on "Uses" (www.cap-digital.com) and for the French National Research Agency.

Nick Leon, Director, Design London

Nick Leon was appointed Director of Design London in October 2007. Design London combines expertise in design from the Royal College of Art, engineering from Imperial College London’s Faculty of Engineering and the business of innovation from its Business School. Nick has not only been a student of all three institutions but his career has spanned all of these disciplines.

Nick is also a Visiting Fellow of Imperial College’s Business School and Director of Urban Programmes for the Think Play Do Group (TPDG). His personal field of research addresses how information and communication technologies and services are helping cities in their quest to become hubs of innovation.

Rashik Parmar IBM Chief Technology Officer (CTO) - North East Europe

Rashik is IBM's CTO for North East Europe, a Distinguished Engineer and a member of the IBM Academy of Technology. During his twenty six years of practical experience in IBM, he has worked for financial, retail and manufacturing clients on IT projects of all sizes. Overall, he specialises in ensuring the technical success of complex IT projects. He currently leading projects related to IBM's Smarter Cities programme and development of techniques to drive industry level innovation.

Rashik is also IBM’s Partnership Executive for Imperial College – London. He has recently been appointed as Adjunct Professor for Department of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the Imperial College Business School. In addition, he a Visiting Professor to the Intelligent Systems and Networks Group at the Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering.

Jakob Rasmussen, Chairman, Living Labs Global

Is a specialist in ICT, diffusion of technology, technical change, knowledge economy and regional innovation and development. Rasmussen is a successful entrepreneur, international consultant, technology specialist and academic, joining business insights and academic research with international consultancy, innovation and business creation. Rasmussen worked as a senior consultant for companies such as Telia, debitel, Sonofon, Astra Zeneca, Microsoft, Lego and Maersk developing ICT strategies, corporate strategy and advice relating to innovation and design of ICT. After his initial years in Microsoft, he has started two successful ICT companies and has helped establishing IBM’s Scandinavian CRM division. Rasmussen holds a PhD in regional development, institutional strategy and the diffusion of ICT from Copenhagen Business School, where he also serves as a visiting senior lecturer in innovation, ICT, and international strategy.





Victoria Thornton, Hon FRIBA

Victoria Thornton has been involved in the field of architecture for over twenty years, working with a wide range of public bodies, community groups and professionals to explore issues related to London’s existing and future architecture.

Victoria is Founding Director of Open House, established in 1992. Open House helps to challenge perceptions, break down barriers and inspire people to demand high quality places for current and future generations. Its pioneering programmes target young people, decision-makers, and the wider community, and is divided into three specific strands – education, advocacy and public engagement.

As well as director and curator of many exhibitions and initiatives, Victoria established the RIBA Architecture Centre (1994-98); has been Architecture Consultant to the British Council VAD (1998-2000); architectural advisor to the Scottish Arts Council (2000) and judge for the RIBA Awards (2003), Chair and Board Member of Architecture Centre Network (2006) and the Department of Culture Media and Sports’ Engaging Places Advisory Panel (2007)

She is currently a Board Member of the Irish Architecture Foundation, based in Dublin and a founding member of the Association of Architecture Organisations, based in Chicago.

In 2003 RIBA awarded an Honorary Fellowship to Victoria Thornton in recognition of her contribution to architecture and the education of future generations, and in 2005 awarded an honorary MA degree by London Metropolitan University. She completed an MA relating to European architecture policy and young people (2009).

David Wilde- Chief Information Officer for - Westminster City Council – London

David is driving forward an exciting new ICT strategy based on the principles of customer centric service delivery, a zero infrastructure technology environment and transformational change.

He was previously CIO at the London Borough of Waltham Forest, with responsibility for the Council’s access to services strategy, transforming service delivery, all ICT and the project and programme management profession.

Prior to that David was Head of e-Business and Head of Internal and Electronic Communications for the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM), where he was responsible for development and delivery the ICT strategy and service management, e-government and internal and electronic communications strategies and operations. He also ran Internet service development and delivery for the Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency (CCTA) and worked on Schools capital policy in the Department for Education and Employment, including the New Deal for Schools programme.
