Dmitri Shostakovich died in 1975 after acquiring a long list of Soviet awards, including 13 times receiving the Stalin Prize. The War Symphonies, shot on location in St Petersburg and Moscow by the award-winning musical film director, Larry Weinstein, profers the now widely accepted theory of Shostakovich's composition, not as triumphal Soviet homages but anti-communist expression.
