The University of Richmond Taiko Drummers May 6, 2012

Maymont will showcase some of Richmond’s premier performance groups during “OnStage @ Maymont,” a free admission arts and music series offered through June.

For centuries, taiko drums have been used in Shinto and Buddhist ceremonies and celebrations across Japan. The University of Richmond Taiko Ensemble, with drums built from empty wine barrels and rawhide, continues a trend of college-based taiko groups that began in the 1990s. They will perform in the Japanese Gardens.

There will be two performances; the second is at 2:30.
