The Telling as performed by exiled Salvadoran artist Koyote the Blind involves precise gesture, intentional mood, minimalist set and lighting, humor, and extemporaneous storytelling. Developed by Toltecs in tenth-century Mexico and preserved throughout Latin America in the underground tradition of the locos, storytelling drifters, The Telling produces in audience members the impression that the highly experiential piece was created especially for them.
The Telling evokes uncanny responses in participants: “I was immersed in the silence, the beauty, the gentleness, the mystical transformation. . . . ”; “Sound became an ocean of pure energy, freeing ourselves and our attention from the constant grip of meaning, symbolism, and illusionary living”; and “There was no separation, no atmosphere, no I perceiving That. Only the presence of the Presence.” The Telling has evoked similarly extraordinary responses from scores of patrons. Artist Koyote the Blind arranges word and story rhythmically in response to the present moment.
